Biography

Robert Silla has established a distinguished career as an oboist, soloist, director and researcher. He is Principal Oboe of the Spanish National Orchestra (Orquesta Nacional de España) and maintains an active international career performing with leading orchestras and conductors across the European musical scene.

At the age of 22, he was appointed Principal Oboe of the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto – Casa da Música, and one year later joined the Spanish National Orchestra as Principal Oboe, a position he continues to hold.

For more than a decade, he has been a regular collaborator with the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala and the Filarmonica della Scala in Milan. His international career has led him to perform with ensembles such as the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Wiener KammerOrchester, Camerata Bern, musicAeterna and the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, among others. He has worked with some of the most renowned conductors of our time, including Riccardo Chailly, Kirill Petrenko, Daniel Harding, Myung-whun Chung, Daniele Gatti, Teodor Currentzis, John Eliot Gardiner, Philippe Herreweghe, Jakub Hrůša and Lahav Shani.

As a soloist, he has performed the major oboe concerto repertoire with conductors such as Giovanni Antonini, Emmanuelle Haïm and Cornelius Meister.

He is founder and artistic director of il Maniatico Ensemble, a multidisciplinary project that brings together performance, research and artistic creation. Among its main areas of work is the exploration and revival of eighteenth-century Spanish musical heritage, including the world premiere recording of the complete collection of Cayetano Brunetti’s sextets for oboe and strings, released by IBS Classical and awarded the “Exceptional” distinction by Scherzo, the “Golden Seal” by Melómano, Five Diapasons by Diapason magazine and the Anaclase Award. His discography also includes a recording devoted to the sonatas and trio sonatas of Johann Sebastian Bach, which received outstanding recognition from national and international critics.

Trained with Vicente Llimerà, Emanuel Abbühl at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Mannheim and Maurice Bourgue, he was awarded the Extraordinary Prize for his Degree and the Euterpe Award for Best Academic Career. He holds a Master’s Degree in Musical Research from the International University of Valencia, and his research focuses particularly on eighteenth-century Spanish music and the repertoire of the Madrid court.

An artist of Marigaux and IBS Classical, Robert Silla combines an outstanding international performing career with research and the creation of new artistic spaces that connect tradition, knowledge and musical expression.
